The cheap Chinese import generators have been on the market for at least 30 years.

Generally they work for folks. I’ve heard the bearings are crap but a generator doesn’t usually get a lot of hours anyway. If it has grease fittings it would be a good idea to use them before running it. Best design will have a drain plug opposite grease zerk. Remove plug and pump in grease until fresh grease purges out drain plug. Then replace plug. Motors and generators do not function well with a bunch of grease inside on the windings, so some common sense is required when greasing motor and generator bearings! If it has sealed bearings, all bets are off! I’ve gotten brand name (Peer) bearings from Deere parts that were made in China that failed in two days!

That said, I would keep a lookout for a unit that does what you want that’s already built. You can do it, but usually you wind up with a cobbled up mess that costs more than what you could have bought a nice one and repaired it if it needed anything. Maybe they don’t come as big as you’re wanting to have?

The voltage would be a problem unless it’s reconnectable. Might be, but unless you need 480 3 phase it won’t be the one for you if it’s not reconnectable. 400/50 can usually be adjusted to 460-480/60 hz
