Milford, IL | We live in an older home, 1940s built. It is a well built home in good condition but I expect attention to basement insulation in 1941 was probably not like today. I have insulated the rim joist. Home has a natural gas furnace that has vents and return air in the basement, but the basement is still 8 to 10 degrees cooler than the main floor and second story. We use the basement quite a lot year round, it is partially finished and comfortable, except for the cooler winter temps. Forced air furnace is an 80% unit from the early 2000s and works properly.
Mini split would be easy to install but Im not sure how well those work when heat is desired? Basement has an unused fireplace that has a natural gas line installed already - a gas fireplace insert is an option, would probably want a liner of some kind in the chimney. A new higher efficiency furnace may also fix the problem by sourcing combustion air from outside? Looking for advice on which way to proceed. | |
