Subject: RE: Mowing roads, today vs 50's

West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12
The biggest reason for mowing roadsides around here back in the day was to prevent snow drifting.

With the vast improvement/height of most road grades around here since the 40s, 50s, and 60s, along with the increased size/capability/speed of snow removal equipment and chemical control of brush/noxious weeds since the 40s, 50s, and 60s, mowing road ditches isn't the necessary evil it used to be around here.

With that being typed, "they" still do a good job of mowing roadsides around here IMO. Road ditches get mowed at least two or three times per year. We used to have to mow our own township road ditches way back ion the day but haven't had to do that in at least five decades because the township mows them...and we trespass/farm most of the ROW that doesn't get mowed...and I don't expect State/County/Township employees to be out in the elements riding antiquated cab less tractors pulling antiquated five and six foot wide equipment nowadays when I'm not.

The thousands...millions of tons/gallons of poultry and hog manure stink up our neighborhood far more than an occasional rotting road kill carcass does...which crows, turkey vultures, eagles, coyotes, and other scavengers do a pretty good job of cleaning up. The adopt a highway programs are pretty successful for road garbage removal around here...but do pose a lot of risk for participants...especially along busy roads.
