Waterloo- I know just what you mean! One of my favorite movie scenes is from Spencer's Mountain, where Henry Fonda calls church people something like, "a buncha foot-washin', knee scrapin' hypocrites".

Also, I remember my own mother being horrified that a mother of one of my confirmation classmates asked if it would be okay if he wore 'tennis shoes'- what we called them back then- to the ceremony (indicative enough that she even felt she had to ask). It wasn't that they couldn't afford the shoes, it just would have been a waste of money to buy a kid dress shoes to be worn probably only once. But my mother just knew that Jesus would be insulted by someone wearing the wrong shoes. That, right there, started to show me the difference between 'church' and 'religion'.

The Cosmic Big Guy surely has better things to do than punish someone for his/her apparel, but that's the kind of narrow focus earthly Church People seem to have.
