Hastings, Florida | Live in a large winter vegetable production area. North Florida. About 5 thousand acres cabbage and broccoli , another thousand of oriental veggies, 20,000 acres of 'taters. I watched one planting crew of around 30 imported workers in one field on one farm earlier today. This work used to be done by migrant American labor, who followed the crops, but no more. Simply not available. Our area probably brings in 4 or 5 hundred hard working folks, who want to work, and then go home with $$$$ in their pockets. They are paid well, housing furnished, treated nicely. Our native labor is simply not available, at just about any price. |
