Subject: RE: Thread on double alley

Northwest Iowa
A lot depends on the type of animals going through the system. We have a Foremost double alley in the feedlot. In a building dumping to the outside so limited run length. It is a 12' half tub feeding a 10' double alley, 8' transition alley, then just 10' single alley feeding the squeeze chute. We only run 600# to 1500#(also a fat animal load out) through it. With 3 guys, it works perfect. 10 cattle into the tub at a time. Alley holds 5-6 animals. Covered alley so no jumping on each other(really nice feature). The transition gate is open bars so we have few issues with balking at the gate. As long as you have an animal left in the alley when the next batch comes into the tub, they feed really well. You could not convince me at this location to do it any other way. We have a tub/curved alley at our home feedlot and have waaayyyy more trouble with it feeding too well and the cattle all just pile on top of each other right in front of back gate of the chute. I don't know how cows or small calves would work in a double alley like this as we have never used it for our cow herd. For the most part, once cows have been thru the same setup a couple of times, none of them work really well. Sometimes cows have too good of a memory. I do know if you are going to give shots over the side, forget the double alley. You couldn't reach the other side and would be hard to keep track of who was vaccinated and who wasn't.
