Rye is huge volume per acre, kind of course and rough and not the most absorbent.

Oats is fine and nice can be a bit dirty or dusty, the cattle might eat it which upsets some specific feeding regimens.

Wheat always seemed to be the premium around here, similar to a clean and finer rye straw.

Barley seems low yielding per acre, kinda like wheat.


Some of this goes back a lot of years, things might be different now if other comment……

Soybean stubble can make a bit of a tough mat over a manure pack.not the easiest to deal with but has its uses.

Since small grains faded away here in the 80s, most just use shredded corn stocks now.
