I'm afraid of a similar issue as you had if I try direct cutting it. I have a barge box wagon with a perforated false floor and a fan. I'm tentatively planning to chop the heads off into the wagon and drying, then tossing them into an Allis Chalmers All Crop combine with a pitchfork.
Wishing I could find a more mechanized process though.
