For weed control you will need to drill it in. 1 bu cereal rye would be sufficient, put in with a seeder/drill in narrow (7.5-8 in) rows. Will need to no-till plant the soybeans green and hold off planting beans until rye is almost heading out. Most “yellow” chems like treflan need to be incorporated so they do not pair well as a pre emerge with rye.

Only reason to plant a mix in this case would be to qualify for public/private incentives for a diverse cover crop.

Aerially seeding will not give you even enough results for weed control, especially when it’s dry. You may not see much for growth this fall but next spring, cereal/hybrid rye will look nice.


After aerial seeding in 2024 with a plane and the cluster it became to manage “separate fields within the same field”, I give a huge +1 to what Green Acres wrote!!
