Do I do that? Not exactly. I will still put in some wheat this fall on summer fallow. I planted some milo this year for agronomic reasons. Took about a $100/acre hit compared to planting corn but for a few particular fields where we had a fire 3 years ago, milo seemed like it might produce better than corn. I probably will get more residue but it will still not make much if any money.
Forages would be a tough call like you said.
I have usually just stayed in a rotation that I feel maximises yields regardless of expected prices. Hard to out guess the market. |
