Not all that long ago when dad had about 2 head of cattle per acre of pasture, in the hot dry years we (by we I mean mostly me…) would go out with a hay rack and a corn knife and hand chop off about 2-3 foot high pile of corn stalks with milky or later corn.

We would feed half of that to the 15-25 head of cattle one day, just pull it off the hay rack while driving along in low gear.

Then feed the second half the second day.

Then get the corn knife and repeat.

Cattle seemed quite happy, the pasture survived. A few cornstalks were left and we were feeding the right amount; a bit of the corn plants were left laying we fed too much, if the stalks were nearly all cleaned up we should feed a bit more.

I’m sure this doesn’t fit modern feed rationing and rates of gain and all, but…..

If the weather has been dry, could nitrate (nitrite ?) poisoning be a possibility?
