Indiana | davy crockett - pre`s do very little on cukes, they germinate all summer from 4" down, you have to spray often and late to control cukes, there`s just no other answer.
This is right. You have a seed bank, and they germinate long after your pre has been used up. Especially in August/Sept with rains. I am heading out to a couple spots today to walk the corn to check.
While I am a no-tiller, I have never preached that it is a cure-all for Bur. I have found that my huge earthworm population is an actual detriment. The night crawlers pull those top surface cucumber seeds down their hole and they germinate from that hole.
Also the seed lasts a long time in the soil. I'm working on a spot that got away from me almost 7 years ago, and I'm still fighting those old seeds (I have not let any go to seed since then). So this is not a kill it for 2 years and I'm done. You need to have a decade long plan.
Bottom line, if you have Bur-cucumber problems, don't wait. Plan on going out and checking in August and again in September, especially if you have been getting rains. You can get multiple flushes with plenty of rain. Then, use whatever means you have to kill it, either glyphosate, 2,4-D, pulling, etc. Use a drone or a high boy. Do NOT let them go to seed. |
