S Illinois | You raise a good question. Why not just cut a check directly to the farmer in the same amount that the government pays in subsidy to the insurance company. Then all farms can self insure and the crop insurance industry goes away along with administration fee that the government pays. The question becomes however will the farmer realize the risk they are then taking on and will government resist the calls for support when some may fail. Also the locations with loss ratios above say .8 or .9 may not like taking on the risk where currently they get more than they pay in. | |
