I had a similar situation in a 1940s house. The original insulation was just shoved tight against the eaves and the attic cooked every summer. Once I added proper baffles and soffit vents, the whole house stayed cooler and my shingles lasted longer. It's worth the hassle of drilling into the blocking now before you blow insulation in
