Western Oregon | I dug the walkways 6" deep and mounded with 12" of free wood chips from the tree trimmers. 6" all around the plants. Any that come up outside where I want them, very easy to pull, root and all. We only need 6 plants, 5 canes tied to each T-post in the fall, lots of side branches with fruit. Planted 3' apart, they fill in the row. We cut back to 6' tall in the spring. We make 16 pints of freezer jam and all we can eat. I found cultivating just made more starts. Did the same with the strawberries, Just a long mounded row all covered with wood chips 3" deep. Easy to remove the runners, not many sucker roots actually reach soil....James
