Subject: RE: PSA tests

Very good advice.

I think the baseline is a good point. by starting at age 50, getting a PSA blood test every year you have a baseline to go off of. in may be 2 or 3 for several years, then start climbing.

I was told 5 was the magic number where you had to start worring. but i guess it depends. If you have been 2 or less for years, and all of a sudden it goes to 4.5 that is cause for more testing

Ill also add, get your PSAs done at the same lab year after year. I have seen slight differences from one lab to another. where one lab was always a half a point higher than the other.

I have a friend who is now 61. He has been in Active Surveilience for 5 years. His PSA was running 7 or 8. So after a few of those PSA tests he had a biopsy and he was a G6 in only 2 cores. Hes also had an MRI, which shows nothing. So hes been on AS all this time, with PSA tests every 6 months. They did another biopsy after a couple of years. Again G6 in only 2 cores

His dr said he should be fine continuing AS, but If he was loosing sleep worrying about it he could go ahead and take it out. Friend asked what I thought and I told him to continue AS, not to take it out "just because" The Dr wasnt pushing that, but said some guys get tired of all the testing and worry and "just want it out" Everyones risk and stress level is different.

So hes lived with a high PSA for years, and will continue to monitor it.
