Subject: RE: Effect of uneven emergence on corn yeild

middleish iowa
Several years ago Dad quit raising cows and wanted to plant corn on a 5 acre calving pasture. I had put away the new corn planter as it was the middle of May. He had fertilizer spread and I started disking. Disked again, and again. Wet packed ground, it turned hot and dry. I had never seen so many big hard clods!
I used an old 6 row 3pt sweet corn planter and threw all the leftover seed in. I could see seed 3 inches deep between the clods from the surface. I set the pop up to 44k , got some more seed our dealer had in some partial bags, closed my eyes and planted it. I kept loosing the marker line and it was ugly.
The dam field was right by my house on a main road. I was embarrassed and shamed with it! Rain came and it emerged all the way till June!
I would have needed 20 different colored flags to document emergence.
In the end, unbelievable great yield...no high tech planting equipment ... probably the best yield that year.
