Yeah, have never had a cover crop failure using a drill, but it does take time which can be a precious thing.
Now that I have a harrow, last fall I had the c. rye spread with fert. on 1 field and then I harrowed afterwards, which compared decently to the drilled c. rye field next to it. Yes, the drilled was visually thicker, but the harrowed cover crop was reasonably close, and both got 30#/acre. If I'd have bumped that up to 50 on the spread field, think it would have compared very well to the drilled.
