Subject: RE: roller crimping timing

You are still several days away from fully terminating the rye with a roller. Once you start seeing anthers hanging from the heads I would suggest waiting another 3 to 4 days to start to ensure most plants have reached the reproductive stage. If you go too soon the crimper will not kill the plant even if it's laying it down flat. The plants goal in life is to reproduce and if will continue to tiller off the crown even if you mow it prior to it's reproduction phase. If you plan to chase the crimper a few days later with a sprayer then going as soon as you see anthers is acceptable. I don't mind running a crimper over emerged beans at any stage prior to V4 IF the plant is not attempting to elongate which is very likely to happen if you have a dense thick cover limiting sunlight to the ground surface. If the beans are emerged when you crimp i suggest crimping the same direction you planted.

If I understand how you described your crimper the crimping blades are only 1/2" tall? We tested several different blade heights when designing a roller crimper and i do not think you are going to be satisfied with the job it does under less than ideal conditions, even then it probably won't be acceptable for a total termination pass.

Here is a picture of a customer roller crimping in GA a couple weeks ago about 4 days after his rye started shedding pollen.
