I took a little road trip last week end for a bull sale. Saw quite a bit of southern NE, northern KS. Was surprised at the overall lack of cows, especially along the Platte in NE. There were certainly cows in spots, but if you looked close you could see a lot of places that once had cattle, that hadn't had any in awhile. And some places that had obviously been pasture, plowed up for a few acres of added crop, and a lot of tree piles obviously cleared to add crop acres. One thought is that cows overall, have been pushed to less and less productive acres. That will generally raise the overall cost of production. We are in a dry area, but hay is relatively cheap. Was talking with a friend who usually turns out early May. No grass so he is looking at buying hay. He told me that cattle aren't nearly high enough to think about having to feed hay to replace grass for very long.

The other thought is that to replace cows, there has to be heifers bred, Pius they have to get rebred to make it into the cow herd, I suspect this is getting to be a bigger issue between drought and generally cows pushed to more marginal land.
