How much profit left after you buy heifers or even old cows? Around here lot of guys would like to expand or start in but land isn’t available. Unless you have cash from somewhere or other equity going to be tough to buy much. But it’s about time cow/calf guys make money. Just curious as to the no land available comment. A year ago there was a 420 acre farm on online auction that butted up to Wayne county, iowa. I went down and looked it over. It was all being pastured, but could have very easily been 75% row cropped, and still leave 25% of the steeper stuff leading down to the wooded small creek bottoms, of which there were three. The farm directly across the road still had its corn crop standing, I took the liberty to wander in aways and shuck a few ears back. It would have been impressive just about anywhere. I realize they had a nice weather year previously, but impressive none the less. Anyway, this farm had cows on every acre, very good fences, couple nice ponds in the biggest pastures. I wanted it as a Missouri hunting farm, there were some nice whitetails mixed with those cows. Figured I could get $100 acre for pasture rent for the good acres. It ended up bringing $4,300 acre across the board. Of course who knows where the eventual buyer would have stopped had I pushed him. But looking back today, I think that guy got a very nice farm for the money. Especially if he lived right there and was working the land himself. I just couldn’t make the numbers work good enough renting it out, so I passed. Had I lived there, and been able to manage it myself, it was a good enough farm there’s no way I’d not have put 75% back into row crops. That’s the kind of farm it was. Anyway, just some musings this morning on a missouri farm that was available to the high bidder, seemed priced right for a local?
