Tall enough they cannot get their head over it, straight sides if running just cows although if a bit narrower on the bottom it does seem to help. Old standard was 30 inches, but again if just cows I would go 32 inches and straight as is much easier to build. I used harvester panels on one side about 12-14 inches off the ground with silo staves on an angle up held by a dirt bank on the outside of the panels on the top, 5 and 6 foot gates on the other side because it slants up hill, I like this as easy to work cows along and if I want to clean or repair bottom of that alley I can just open the gates for access.
