Faunsdale, AL | The difference isn’t horizontal vs vertical, it’s if the crimp is adjustable.
Some machines like my Parkrimp 1 are designed to be idiot proof. They use a stop ring that’s specific to each type/class of fittings and you only have to press until the ring bottoms out on the press frame.
And in fact, the Parker dies have a minimum crimp diameter not much smaller than what using the press rings produces, so while you could use a thicker press/gauge ring to make a larger diameter crimp, you cannot go much smaller than the standard crimp by using a thinner gauge ring because the dies won’t do it.
Other machines have adjustment and can crimp to different specs. Less idiot proof but more versatile.
