I wouldn't trust google much in this case. Lots of examples in the past where the ground was smaller than the hot conductors. The ground has to be sized to trip the breaker, does not need to carry current because it should never carry current. I can't answer the question, because you'd ordinarily have a neutral, but with no neutral, I'm not sure what that does to the ground requirement.
