Subject: SDI Irrigation Initial Cost

MO
looking through the archives I see this gets brought up every few years, but wondering what a current rough estimate would be for installing sub surface drip? 40" space on 45 degree angle to the normal row direction. land that is fairly flat and can block off several squares / rectangles so we aren't dealing with a lot of point rows. Clay loam / slightly sandy loam soil. 300 gallon well and about 100-110 acres that could be done in total (in 4 blocks but would be contiguous to central well). Pivot could work but would windshield wipe and only get about 60-70 of the acres.

What would I be looking at cost wise for rough estimate on the SDI?

All I can say is talk to three or four people who have it. It is close to double Center pivot irrigation and yes it does do the whole field but there is maintenance and if your water is hard it can be worse. Varmits are a big issue. You can't water up a crop.

Three of the four I know of around here the operator would not do it again.

Ross,

Rough cost is $2-3000 per acre, depending on shape and layout of field.
