Could please expand on what classes of cattle you are required to tag in your state? Original question on this thread for for slaughter cattle, do you have to RFID tag your slaughter cattle?

In Michigan any animal (cattle) that leaves your farm is required by law to have an rfid tag. Doesn't matter if it's for slaughter, selling as replacements, or a steer calf for your neighbor to raise in his back yard

A little story on this, last year I had a young lady buy a calf to show at the local fair. Her parents also bought a litter mate for two reasons, one being partner of the show calve and second for meat in the family freezer. Now, their 'farm' wasn't registered, so they had no ID tags (nor Federal number). The calf was re-tagged by me after loading on their trailer (the show calf, IDK what happened to first tag I installed a couple weeks earlier). A couple weeks went by and the show calf was missing his tag again. So, I went over to their place and re-tagged him. A month or so later, I get called that his tag is missing again, and he needs one to go to the local fair weigh in, so I give them another tag. Then I get a call needing another tag, just before the fair. Seems the freezer beef was chewing the how calf's tags off. The last tag was inserted, on the trailer just before he was unloaded at the fair.

Now if it had been the freezer beef with no tag, they may have gotten away with no tag at some slaughterhouses.
