Ne Nebraska
Same boat here, 1st and second calvers usually have great breed up. But I keep replacements in their own pen and 1st calvers in their own pen in the spring before grass turnout and breeding. Their second calf is their first winter/spring with the main herd, and I will have the most opens in that age group coming with their 3rd calf. This winter I am keeping the coming 2nd and 3rd separate on stalks and going to push a tad more protein to them, will go with the main herd come March calving time tho. See if it makes a difference a year from now.
