It's easier to start being a farmer than keeping it going and the the hardest is to wind it down, the taxes are brutal.
Everybody keeps saying how the taxes are so brutal, yet can retire from farming with completely depreciated equipment, no expenses the last year, sell the land cuz no one to take over for huge capital gains, all that, and not owe any federal income taxes. In fact, even earn a credit towards future taxes owed. And yet, maybe, maybe 1/2 of one percent of farmers tax plan properly before selling out.
