NW Illinois | Usually when I get into a fertilizer conversation about 2 yr, specifically the P portion ahead of corn, the discussion starts with maximizing the investment. Most P sources have nitrogen in them, TSP doesn’t. So question is how/if that nitrogen can be used to benefit the corn crop. Simplistic is applying dry however you choose, but making the application closer to planting. Even if you can’t use it as a credit against other nitrogen sources due to it being VR, it’s still there for use in a nitrogen using crop. TSP rids you of that for fall, but you need to look at the bigger picture of fertilizer sources for your area. TSP should be 80.00 a ton under DAP, if not, that makes the nitrogen in DAP very economical. TSP should be 100.00 a ton cheaper than MAP, or you or overpaying for units of phosphate.
As far as making a fertilizer spread rec, if you are considering buying a 2.5 grid test, then it makes sense to use that information in the rec. if you choose not to, you can still make a VR rec based on harvest data, if you have it, without adding the layer of soil test information. If you don’t have solid harvest data, you can even make VR rec of digital soil data map, and assign yields to different soil types. The possibilities are wide or you can keep it very simple. | |
