Have you noticed them dropping back by a week or two each year?

Do they get fed separate from the main herd for a year or two and this is the first year they truly have to compete for feed?

Just trying to spitball ideas. I find that coming 3rd calvers often feed their calves full-bore vs heifers that might short the calf to spare their own condition. They might just need some extra groceries somewhere along the way. It took me a while but I came to the conclusion that once that replacement heifer comes up bred, I want to get her up to size before she calves. Unless you wean early, there just doesn't seem to be another good time to do it and if they can't get up to size then it seems just a matter of time before they fall out. I'd rather that happen sooner rather than after I have more invested into her.
