Subject: RE: 608c chopping shut off

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
When I last traded combines, I went with a used Deere 9770 with the 5 speed header drive. This type of drive uses a powershift style transmission located behind the cab. The changes in head and throat speed are handled there. A multi-groove drive belt with fixed sheaves is used to transmit the power from the 5 speed unit to the throat. This eliminates the need for using a single belt and variable width sheaves. The result is less heat is produced since the multi-groove belt is able to handle the power required better.

The reason I desired the 5 speed was that I planned on getting a chopping corn head and I felt this would be a better combination. I searched around for a 9770 with the 5 speed. If a dealership had one, the salesman would agree that was the way to go with a chopping head. If they didn't have a 9770 with the 5 speed drive, the salesman would say they never had any problem with the other drive options.

My 608C is 2014 model and I have the option of shutting off the choppers individually row by row although I've never done it.

My combine and heads came from the same dealer but the 608C chopping head and the combine had come from different former owners. They mated together fine and I have been happy with the combination. I do change the oil in the reverser each year. The oil is quite expensive, but I feel it is worth it. I have not had any failures with the reverser.

This all being said, I feel the 5 speed is the way to go with the chopping head. However, I was surprised to note that when I watched a video on an X9 combine, it appears that Deere uses the single belt variable sheave approach on them. This is located toward the rear of the combine and a very long multi-groove belt is used from it to the front. Maybe a powershift transmission is an option.
