Subject: New Claas dealer in Minnesota?

MN
With Ziegler exiting the ag market anyone heard who is picking up the Claas combine contract? Arnold's have the chopper's but I'm betting CNH won't allow them to have Claas combines- and who will pick up the AGCO equipment that Ziegler is letting go? Anyone heard anything?

40 miles North of Waterloo Ia
I called my Ziegler store for parts for my Claas Rotary rake 6 weeks ago and they told me to call somewhere else, only Claas machinery they had parts available for was combines and that was for one more year, I think the store in New Hampton Ia that didn’t handle Claas parts is still going to handle Agco, at least that’s what they told my neighbor that got a new Gleaner.

I agree
The Marshall store has new fendt tractors and a ideal combine sitting out front… so I highly doubt they are exiting ag equipment all together

Marshall MO store and 2 wisconsin stores are closing.

I guarantee you Claas will not let the MN market go, they will be opening up some stores or finding dealers before the contract runs out with ziegler.

SE North Dakota
Claas pulled the line from Butler and Zeigler. They didn’t drop Claas. Claas wasn’t happy that they weren’t pushing their tractor lines and only wanted to push combines so now they have this bright idea that they will just magically open dealerships 1 in every state. Yep that will work out well for them. I can understand Butler only pushing one tractor line because that’s what they have been pushing for years why risk pushing a whole new tractor line that nobody knows anything about. The two track Cat/Challenger has more than proven itself and can basically sell itself why not concentrate on that. Claas shot themselves in the foot as far as I am concerned. 0 reason for me to switch to them.

Butler is still trying to sell Claas. The Fendt Ideal has been a failure. And Gleaner isn't ever going to expand market share.

Claas is a mainline dealer everywhere else in the world but here.

Everyone complains there's no competition in farm machinery until a company wants to compete, then they get badmouthed.

Postville Iowa
I’m from NE Iowa and have a Claas combine. This fall I went to Arnold’s to get an alternator because they were the only ones that had one, uses same alternator as Claas chopper. They had a brand new Claas combine and head there. I asked the parts guy what was going on, he didn’t know. It was a Saturday afternoon so no salesman there. They also had 3 Claas tractors there. They are a dealer for Claas tractors and hay equipment but not combines as of a month ago.

Marshall mo store packed up and was gone in August. Parallel Ag accross the street took the Agco contract on since they became a part of Livingston in texas and ok. Now the merged with AC McCartneys 5 stores. Not a good deal. Theses chain stores are causing lots of gripe even on the Deere side. I give it 3 years and Ziegler will be completely out of Ag. Sucks for the guys up at New Hampton IA. Thats a heck of a building they have up there, been nice if the old owner could of found someone to take it over but lots of hoops and hurdles with Agco.

I think the real difficulty lies on being 2nd fiddle to whatever flagship brand the dealer has. Especially if they push to have no competing brands of like equipment. It's hard to grow when dealers are chosing case or fendt over you. With stand alone stores, the techs, salesman and staff are dedicated to claas (in theory) and not another brand.

The Fendt Ideal has been a failure.

Marketing failure or a machine failure in your opinion?

Local dealer has sold a number of them. Some repeat customers. Hard to build up a large customer base quickly though. Evidently easier to sell than a Gleaner in our area.

Marketing genius / mechanical failure. Very few around here, I've never met someone that has owned one for a while that is happy. Butler had a few low houred used ones to get rid of and they shipped them to Indiana to auction off on Big Iron because they thought Indiana had the best market penetration. They still only brought 140k for 400 separator hour machines. Talk to a Butler combine tech and they'll tell you you're better off in a Claas or a Gleaner. Maybe that will change and they'll be able to work the bugs out but combines are complicated machines... that's why you hardly ever see complete redesigns vs. slow incremental changes to a proven design.

They might make good equipment but this thread right here is what turns me off to AGCO, Claas etc. John Deere might have it's flaws they might not be the best built etc etc but they sell a ton of them and there are parts available across multiple levels of aftermarket and dealer networks. It's the number one reason they have such good resale. I welcome the competition in the ag industry it's good for the farmers. But I don't want to be the one holding the resale risk at the end of the deal.

I know many that think along those lines. I have neighbors that are all deere and shop around competing deere dealers. Up until this year there were 3 competing deere dealerships that are closer to our area than any agco dealer. 2 of those 3 deere dealers consolidated now there are only 2. That being said I don't think his S680 and 9560R would do any better than equipment of any flavor if it were on the auction.

You need dealer support. If you don’t that good luck. Hard to beat 16 Deere dealers vs 2 Agco dealers or 3 CNH within 60 miles. I guess I’m lucky to have that many dealers within an hours drive. Agco usually has to order the parts in anyways so they aren’t much help to get back and combining. Waited over a week for 2 minor Massey combine parts this fall. Still scratching my head on why we still own it.

Resale risk...try and sell your Deere S series combine right now and you'll learn about resale.

No brand is perfect...Deere floods the market with late model machines every 5-7 years and can't remember why it killed their resale for the next 2 years while dealers reset their books all in the name of market share...Dealer profitability and viability be damned, we need market share and bonus dollars!!
AGCO struggles with Dealer network and brand recognition
CNH the same to a degree with the NH side, and part availability has been a concern of a lot of customers.

Bottom line, drive what you want, or what makes your bottom line best for your operation. I can tell you almost certainly that my customers get the best resale of any of the local brands around here, especially if considered on percentage of their purchase price...but, that resale is backed by our dealership basically by itself. The Deere dealer here won't trade for anything much more than 5 years old...in fact last week told a mutual customer that JUST traded S790's with them that they wouldn't even give him a price on his 2012 JD 2510H toolbar, because it just doesn't have any value to them...THEY SOLD THE UNIT TO HIM, and are pricing him a new one. So used one, no value...new one, huge value...makes sense to me.

So, again, drive what works best for you and your operation. Different areas have different dealers, that do different things better or worse. I'm not perfect, neither are my competitors...we all have service trucks, and things we should do different or better...just like our customers do.

Chris
