Shut off or not isn’t that big of deal. On our early header we would take five minutes with an air gun and pull the knives, just let the hubs spin. On my newer one with disconnects, I’ve only used them once. Seemed to catch and drag on any down stalks it came across. I don’t shut them off anymore.

Yes a variable speed 9770 will run an 8 row chopping head. Reverser could run hot. On dad’s 9770 and now my 9870, I added a second cooler in series with the factory cooler. Going to a five speed drive also helped, but a fixed speed drive conversion would also accomplish the same thing (less belt slip and heat).
