Subject: Skid Steer alternator question

Nebraska Panhandle
I have a John Deere 270 skid steer. The alternator quit charging. I put a new alternator on it. When running with the brake on the alternator charges about a quarter of the way in the green. Hit the switch to take the brake off and the alternator charges right on the line between the red and green. Speeding engine up or down makes no difference in the charge rate. Is this normal or what could pull the charging rate down that much? Bad brake switch?
