Subject: RE: What Deere engine is this: 4640

I just figured since 4640 oil filter doesn’t fit, it has over 10k hours, zero blow by and burns maybe quart in 50 plus hours.
I have no history on the tractor so really no clue. It’s weighed very heavy so I figured it’s been worked pretty hard.

Back in the 90’s when we ran 40-60 series pulling them hard 6k was about all an engine would run. 4840’s and 4960’s turned up and pulling 12 row stuff. I figure if it had a full weight stack up front and the rears and duals are wet someone was getting all the could from it. But the pump seems to be set really mild. We used to turn the 60’s up to 2400 rpm and make them where they rolled coal if you lugged it any. Ran plows at 6 mph as deep as you could go and keep heat just barely out of warning zone. I’m pretty easy on this one , pull 8 row, but I’ve taken most the weight off because I don’t want to thrash it.
