Jeffersonville, OH | First thing, take a blow gun and blow the junk out of that shield on the LH side of the transmission where the sensor is.
Then, grab an 11/16" or 18mm wrench I believe, and put it on the mechanism on the RH side between the rear tire and transmission, the one with the cable attached to it, and try and shift it manually. Once you get it into either range, then see if it will shift on it's own.
If not, I have seen the arm that attaches to the sensor break, and it will not follow the shift linkage to tell it which range it's in.
