If you want a break from Interstates take Hwy 20 across Iowa, 4 lane all the way, Dubuque to Sioux City, then take I-29 north to Sioux Falls and I -90. We take 20 from Holstein to Waterloo occassionally, great road, not too much traffic (can't comment about east of Waterloo, but should be ok I would think). only one stop sign across Iowa at Moville.
