Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

Ams-oil is an oil product (engine, hydraulic, etc.). What you are looking for is a surfactant (sp?). Basically, it makes water "wetter" by breaking down the surface tension of the water. Have you ever wondered how some bugs can seemingly "walk on water?" Actually, they can. They are light enough that their weight does not break the surface tension of the water allowing them to "walk" on the surface of a pond. By adding a surfactant the surface tension of the water is reduced giving it the ability to seep into smaller pores. Back in the 1960s and 1970 when we grew cotton dad would buy the cheapest dish detergent he could find by the case. In every tank of water on the cotton picker we would dump in a bottle. The water was used to dampen the spindles so that the cotton would slide off more easily. By adding the detergent (which is essentially a surfactant) it made the spindles slicker and the cotton would slide off more easily.

I remember as a kid going with dad to a customer appreciation event at the local IH dealership. They had just taken on the Lealy Roterra (sp?). They were advertising it as a one pass tool for incorporating preemerge chemicals. They were also pushing using a surfactant so the chemical would get greater penetration into the soil. I don't remember the brand name but that is essentially what the Amway guy mentioned by a previous poster was trying to do. However, what he was attempting was never going to work, regardless of how much he added to the water in the puddle. He obviously did not know his product or its purpose very well.
