I'm told the moldboard plow is what kept whemp down in the old days. The chisel plow brought it on. The fields I plowed this year are seeing less hemp.
The seeds don't last real long and can't emerge from very deep. So plowing brings up "clean" soil if it has been a while since the last deep tillage. That's the big reason plowing helps, but needs to be on a rotation with a few years between.
Rotary hoeing and some dry conditions after planting makes a huge difference too. |
