Subject: RE: Corn Drought Tolerance Compared To Milo Question

NCKS
"Here" the only years milo does better than corn are years where both are below insurance guarantee. I can see if you're in a place where the Aphs are between 60-100bu it being different. But here when the milo is making 75 and the corn is making 60, crop insurance is making me more than whole on the corn end. On more average years on upland ground corn is closer to 120 upright and dry and milo is 100 falling over and wet. 20 years ago this wasn't the case and the yield environment where corn is better keeps getting lower. I would be willing to bet that in another 20 years milo will be a true niche crop with a market price fully decoupled from corn.

Drought traits in corn are a marketing ploy. Here heat tolerance is just as or more important than drought. A drought tolerant hybrid from SE Iowa will likely die before a heat tolerant hybrid with a worse drought score.
