Fargo ND | Reading the post below about split applying N has the wheels turning. In our area our soils are heavy enough that we can get away with full N application pre-plant, but the thought of pulling the pin on a garbage crop has me wondering how much of my N i spread up front is now wasted.
If I spread 170 units of N for a 200 bushel yield goal and turns out it runs 100 bushel do I consider half the N a waste? In my mind had I done half up front and waited to see how the year turned out could I have saved half my money in fertilizer costs? I know there's a lot of factors involved but a couple bad years could really pay for a sidedress bar, clearly there can be some agronomic benefits of split applying N as well.
