Here's what I do on samdy loam (CEC 6-10).
Take first cutting off by first couple days of June, kill (RU) around the 15th of June. Spend the next month or so leveling ground hog holes/dens. Re-spray RU, first week of August. No-till at ~9# of actual seed per pass (I plant twice, in to different directions). Total seed per acre ~18# of actual seed.
This my method that I've been doing for over 25 years.
