WCNY
In the same boat here except no sprayer breakdown. Got triticale killed ahead of planting timely enough.
But Got an education on slugs and am still trying to figure out.
To explain a neighbor on one side who has been more conventional tillage vt ed triticale in at a higher seed rate but more evenly spread than me. They virtually had no issues. My biggest issue was where I overlapped with seed and the triticale was denser. The only other difference was they used a chopping corn head. Neighbor on other side experimented with planting dead and green but not in corn residue. After wheat buckwheat dc or after wheat triticale cover. Again they were more conventional tillage in the past than me. But not by much and did have some issues.
First neighbor planted naked seed. Second neighbor planted with fungicide and insecticide like me. I thought aha neonic was the issue and maybe it isn’t ??
Had an extension crop-bug specialist here this past week and he said no way neonic. He said he was on another farm that was long term notill who wouldn’t use neonic on beans or corn and sent me a picture taken at 10 am with the big brown slugs all over his beans to confirm his thoughts. He talked about another long term no tiller who feels he gets 2 to 3 years out of an application of slug wait and uses it regularly.
My current but limited thinking (says my wife) is slug population increases with less or no till and grass crop in rotation over time.
Btw seed corn maggot was an issue too. Seed dealer told me they didn’t add that insecticide for them in seed treatment package. Didn’t know that and never had that problem either.
In the future I don’t know yet. I’m sure I’ll change my thinking many times over.
Should also say my first time with notill cc bean's. I have been vt fall and spring after corn.
