Holland, Indiana (SW IN) | Been doing covers forever --40 years --last 20 years most every acre
Many "mistakes" ------not really mistakes every year is different
Before corn need to kill early (Mid to last of March 6" tall)--My latest thoughts and read a study that Mike sedakota posted on NAT
Corn has worked planting green some years some not ---doing covers need every year to work corn does not seem to like anything taller than it is
Soybeans I'm starting to think the same thing kill cover last of March in our area
We worry about erosion -"let it get a little taller"
-CC grasses can go from about right to OH S**t in seemingly a couple sunny spring days
Other limiting factors
Drainage --BUT I don't think it's much worse in CC NT than worked ground
Slugs in soybeans --really bad this year
Voles
need N at planting on corn --We like at least 40# in a band both side the row
I think the "mix of different species of CC seed" is a cute way of saying we don't know
We plant some type of grass (annual rye grass-barley-wheat) that the seed costs no more than $6
we plant CC day or 2 after harvest thin with a VT tool
CC IMHO is a continual learning experience "but so is farming in any way"
I think our poorer soil types are getting much better BUT have no way to prove it
