When sizing an AC unit on the hottest day you want the compressor unit to run most of the time. Same with a furnace on the coldest day. Otherwise, you overpaid for the unit. Now that doesn't make you feel better when watching the meter.

Do you turn the fan on ON vs auto? That seems to balance the house more, but I've also heard this is inefficient. I think the person that said that lived in a ranch house vs. 2 story.

How long since the ac unit has been cleaned? That can help their efficiency a little or a lot if really dirty.
