SW Iowa | First thing I'd do is put a temp probe of some sort into the ductwork before and after the coil and see what sort of temp drop you're getting. Not sure how hot/humid/sunny your location has been, but my understanding is for best efficiency you want to size AC system so it runs pretty near continually on the hottest days (oversize system & shorter cycles will cost more to operate)... so you may or may not actually have a problem.
Next step after temp check IMO would be to hook up gauges and check pressures... should be some info in the sticker on the inside of the removable panel of condenser or in the manual, but at that point it may be worth just getting a HVAC contractor out to check and charge. If you try to DIY, make darn sure you understand the procedure for your system, as that can vary depending on setup.
If your system is old enough to use R22 (?) also be aware the phase out timeline hasn't allowed production or import in a few years, so if you are low you're looking at high $ old stock/recovered R22 or evacuating the system to put in replacement refrigerant. (Illegal to add different refrigerant into existing system, because once mixed refrigerant can't be reclaimed.) | |
