Subject: RE: 60” skip rows

North Central Illinois
Cover crops did well. Depending on seed bank, sometimes weeds did too. I'm all organic, so no herbicide constraints and I rely on crop canopy to prevent late season weed emergence.

60" rows with a large seeded cover crop planted in the skip row was the only highly effective weed control strategy. Broadcast smaller seeded cover crop after last cultivation (around v6) established well, but didn't stop weeds. That works better in N-S rows. In E-W rows the south half of the 60" gap is more shaded and has much reduced cover crop growth.

I've backed off to only planting 60" rows for the amount of row feet that I have a market for winter squash. I don't mind giving up 20% of the corn yield if I'm replacing it with something that has more revenue.
