Subject: RE: Establishing native grass herbicides??

Which grasses, what kind of weeds, and what is the soil type what is the pH, is it compacted, is it high in organic matter, etc. If you take a shovel full, do you see worms or grubs?

Why the move to native grasses? And was the stand of rye good, average, poor?

What I am looking for is indications, like low pH can favor various weeds, or if there are a lot of grubs, then maybe the nematodes aren't killing them. Or maybe the mycorrhizal fungi isn't very prevalent so the root systems aren't developing or maybe the right microbial balances needs to be re-established. If it is compacted soil, the weeds might have deep taproot to break up some of the compaction, maybe you are better off just mowing it before it goes to seed.

Native grasses take longer to establish, so maybe they are impatient. If they established quickly with high yield, everyone would be using them already.

Usually June is a bad time to plant grass, so maybe radishes or another brassica or like radish, buckwheat, packer peas type of mix. that doesn't necessarily leave a lot of residue. radish and buckwheat residue usually breaks down fast. which doesn't leave a lot for mulch, but you do end up with better seed/soil contact.

I am not against spraying, if they tried 4 times, then there is possibly an underlying issue that could be treated as well or maybe it is just expectations.
