I used a VT set just deep enough for a little dirt on a few stalks last fall. I was more concerned about laying stalk on ground and cutting them up a little. I did it on 8 acres for a test. I no till corn/soy rotation but after years there's just too much residue. It worked out much better than i hoped and will be doing all my corn stalks this year if ground isn't froze. there's still plenty of residue to control erosion.
