Latimer, Iowa (north central) | Been an interesting spring that drug out from a fast start. Pattern tile and water infiltration has shown up in a big way on fields in our area as we have been wet in the month of May, sitting about perfect now.
Corn: notill planted into cover crop stubble with no trash whippers, 2160 case planter, Epleys non gmo corn. Planted April 23rd. Crop in 2023 was oats, filled by sorghum Sudan, radishes, and turnips. Cattle were grazed on the cover for 3 months last fall gaining 3.06 lbs per day. I really like how the cattle ate the cover down speeding up carbon cycling and C:N ratios. Fertilizer is 2200 (100 units N) gallons hog manure after oats before sorghum on July 28th 2023. Cattle made about 1 ton of cattle manure/acre. Then 1.5 ton chicken litter (110 units N with about half available) and sidedressed about a week ago with 32% (60 units N).
Beans: Planted may 16th. No tilled with same planter into 40 lbs per acre cereal rye. Naked beans. Burndown of 28 oz power max, no pre, will spray post this week. E3 beans. Had 3 ton of cattle manure spread on March 15th. We did have to replant beans in a different field planted on May 21st. They appeared to just rot in the ground. Reasonably common across all tillage practices on that planting date this year. The no-till beams were worse though.
Oats: notill seeded with a 1910/1890 Deere on 7.5s. Seeded March 12th, earliest ever. Reins variety at 80 lbs per acre. No herbicide or fungicides applied. 2200 gallon hog manure last fall following soybeans, next year I think I will apply a ton or two to of cattle manure ahead of the oats as well to help even them out.
